Disasters
can strike quickly and without warning. They could force you to evacuate
or confine you to your home. What would you do if basic services were
cut off?
Local officials and relief workers would be on the scene following the
disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately.
In
today's climate, it is important that people prepare for possible and
unexpected emergencies. Natural or other disasters can strike suddenly,
at any time and anywhere. There are five actions you can take that can
help make a difference:
make a plan, build a kit, get trained, volunteer and give blood.
| Make
a Plan |
 |
Planning
ahead is the first step to a calmer and more assured disaster response.
Making a plan consists of talking with your family, establishing
places to meet in the event of a disaster, learning to shut off
utilities, checking supplies, telling everyone emergency contact
information and practicing. Learn more about making
a disaster plan. Know what you need to do if you are told to
shelter-in-place.

| Build
a Kit |
 |
What
you have on hand when a disaster happens can make a big difference.
Plan to store enough supplies for everyone in your household for
at least three days. Place items in a sturdy, but easy-to-carry
container. (Thirteen gallon trash cans work well.) Keep an even
smaller version in your vehicle. Items
to put in a disaster supplies kit.
Purchase a disaster supplies kit.

| Get
Trained |

|
Learning simple techniques can give you the confidence
to help anyone, and possibly save a life. These three steps help
you react well to an emergency:
- Check the Scene for safety and
the victim for life-threatening conditions.
- Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency
number in your phone book.
- Care for the Victim if you reach
the person safely.
Take
a class to learn more helpful techniques, or visit the workplace
training pages for information about classes for your employees
or co-workers.

| Volunteer |
 |
Many
local residents are touched by Red Cross services, all made possible
by American Red Cross volunteers. The Susquehanna Valley needs more
volunteers. There are many ways to serve. Learn
about local volunteer opportunities.
|
| Give
Blood |
 |
Blood
is needed in emergencies, but the ongoing need is great too. Every
two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs life-saving blood. Your blood
donation can make a difference. One donation has the potential to
save three lives! Find
a local blood drive near you.
