Lifeguarding
Participants must be 15 years of age before the last scheduled day of the course. Students must successfully complete the following: Swim 300 yards continuously. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object above water and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Length Hours 31 hrs, 15 min
Certification Requirements: Attend all class sessions. Demonstrate competency in the three final skills scenarios. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the three sections of the final written exam.

Lifeguard Review
Prerequisites: You must currently be certified in Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or have had them expire no more than one year ago. Students must successfully complete the following: Swim 300 yards continuously. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object above water and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Length: approx 20 hrs

Lifeguarding Challenge
Effective September 1, 2008, those persons choosing to challenge any of the Red Cross Lifeguarding courses must be currently certified or have successfully completed a Red Cross Lifeguarding (full or review course) or another acceptable lifeguarding course within the last four years. This policy applies to Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Instructor, Waterpark Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Attendant.
Current certifications (or those that have expired by no more than 12 months) from the following organizations may be accepted to qualify an individual to take the Lifeguarding Challenge class YMCA Lifeguard, United States Lifesaving Association Open Water Lifeguarding, Lifesaving Society of Canada – Any National Lifeguard Service certification (Pool, Waterfront, Surf or Waterpark), National Pool and Waterpark Pool Lifeguard Training or Special Facilities Lifeguard Training (Ellis & Associates, Inc.), National Aquatic Safety Council Basic Lifeguard, StarGuard Professional Lifeguard, Boy Scouts of America Lifeguarding, American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor, or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Trainer.

Shallow Water Attendant
Purpose: To teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 4 feet deep. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries in shallow water. This course is not intended for the shallow part of an area or attraction that also has deeper water.
Participants must be 15 years of age before the last scheduled day of the course. Students must successfully complete the following: Swim 50 yards continuously, starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, submerge to a depth of 4 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, walk 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 50 seconds.

Certification Requirements: Attend all class sessions. Demonstrate competency in the three final skills scenarios. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the three sections of the final written exam.
