IF DISASTER STRIKES
If disaster
strikes in your area, try to remember these steps:
- Remain
calm and be patient.
- Follow
the advice of emergency officials.
- Listen
to your radio or television for news and instructions.
- If the
disaster occurs near you, check for injuries. Give first aid and get
help for seriously injured people.
- If the
disaster occurs near your home, check for damage using a flashlight.
Never use matches or candles as a light source and do not turn on
electrical switches. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off
the main gas valve, open windows and get everyone outside quickly.
- Shut off
other damages utilities.
- Confine
or secure your pets.
- Call your
family contact--do not use the phone again unless it is a life-threatening
emergency.
- Check
on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled.
If you are
asked to evacuate, know that emergency officials have good reason to make
this request. Listen to your radio or television and follow the instructions
you are given. A few other simple things to keep in mind are:
- Wear long-sleeved
shirts, long pants and sturdy shoes to protect yourself as much as possible.
- Take your
disaster supplies kit.
- Take your
pets with you. Because pets are not permitted in shelters, follow your
animal safety plan.
- Lock your
home.
- Use travel
routes specified by authorities--do not use shortcuts because certain
areas may be impassible or dangerous.
- Stay away
from downed power lines.
