WHEN FLOOD WATCHES AND WARNINGS ARE ISSUED

Flooding can happen quickly. Please read below to learn what to expect in a flooding situation.

Know What to Expect

  • Find out if your area is at a flood risk. (If unsure, call your local emergency management office. The number should be listed in the blue pages of the phone book.) If it is, consider purchasing flood insurance.
  • If it has been raining hard for several hours or steadily raining for several days, be alert to the possibility of a flood.
  • List to local radio and TV stations for flood information and recommendations from local authorities.

When a Flood WATCH is Issued

  • It means that flash flooding is possible in your area.
  • Be alert to signs of flash flooding and be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice.

When a Flood WARNING is Issued

  • It means that a flash flood is occurring or will occur very soon in your area. (If you think it has already, evacuate immediately.)
  • Move to higher ground away from rivers, streams, creeks and storm drains. Do not drive around barricades--they are there for your safety.
  • If you car stalls in rapidly rising waters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.
