EDUCATION SERVICES

Education and training programs help people prevent, prepare for and respond to occupational, community and family health & safety emergencies.

Water Safety

The Red Cross promotes safety in and around the water. Volunteers help as instructors or instructor aides for the following:

  • Learn to Swim Program
  • Infant & Pre-School Aquatics
  • Longfellow's Whales Tales
  • Lifeguard Training
  • Guardstart (pre-lifeguarding preparedness)
  • Basic Water Rescue

Babysitter's Training

This very popular American Red Cross course stresses safety and decision-making for 11-15 year-olds who babysit or wish to babysit. Adult volunteers (17+) are trained as instructors or instructor aides to teach at any of our satellite locations. Youth volunteers can train to be instructor aides for this course.

First Aid/CPR

There is an extensive list of courses and sessions that teach first aid and/or CPR skills. You can take them for your benefit or become an instructor or instructor aide to present the following:

  • Basic Aid Training (BAT)

HIV Education

In cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control, the Red Cross is a leader in teaching the facts about HIV and AIDS. Volunteers are needed to provide community prevention education to high-risk populations and the general public.

  • Starter Facts
  • Basic HIV/AIDS Prevention Education
  • African American HIV/AIDS Prevention Education

Volunteer opportunities include...

  • Offer presentations to school groups and community organizations
  • Represent the department at information tables
  • Assist with special events, like World AIDS Day
