PUBLIC SUPPORT SERVICES

The local American Red Cross public support department works diligently to promote and raise funds to support programs and services throughout the Susquehanna Valley.

Campaign Assistant

The American Red Cross relies on major direct mail campaigns to raise vital funds. During these campaigns, a variety of mail pieces are returned due to out-of-date addresses. Also, many individual pieces of mail containing contributions have problems such as incorrect payee on check. A volunteer is needed during these campaigns to handle these administrative details. Confidentiality is required, and the ability to communicate in a friendly and professional way by phone with donors. Computer literacy also required. Training is provided.
Volunteer Schedule: December, January, March, April & July
Hours Required: Estimated 2-3 hours per week
Minimum Age: 25


Fundraiser

The American Red Cross relies on charitable contributions from the community to do its humanitarian work. Volunteers are needed to help raise funds. Ideally such volunteers would be knowledgeable about the community, and willing to either ask for contributions on their own, or make introductions and appointments for staff to make requests for contributions. Training and orientation in how to ask for a charitable contribution are available. This work is sensitive and requires excellent communication ability.

Public Relations Disaster Communicator

Volunteers are needed to communicate information about Red Cross disaster response to media via written news releases, telephone and sometimes live TV or radio interviews from disaster scenes. When on duty, it maybe necessary to go to a disaster (typically house fires). PR Disaster Communicators must be excellent speakers and comfortable performing interviews with television, radio and print media. After receiving local experience there may be opportunities to advance to Red Cross National Disaster assignments.

Hours Required: On call 24 hours a day when scheduled
Minimum Age: 21


Public Speakers

Often, community organizations request a Red Cross representative to attend an event and speak about the services Red Cross programs and services. Experience the fun and satisfaction of spreading the Red Cross message to fellow community members in businesses, schools, civic clubs and other community organizations. A friendly personality and good public speaking skills are necessary.

Hours Required: 20-60 minute presentations
Minimum Age: 21


Special Events Volunteers

The American Red Cross sponsors special events throughout the year. Currently, golf outings are planned in Lancaster, Dauphin and Mifflin counties. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including administrative work (mailings, data entry), committee work (planning, making arrangements) and event setup and breakdown.
